ATP powers energy coupling by acting as the immediate donor of energy for cellular work. When a cell needs energy for an endergonic process, a phosphate group is transferred from ATP to a target molecule in a process called phosphorylation. This attachment often changes the target molecule’s shape or reactivity, making the reaction proceed. The energy release comes from ATP breaking down to ADP and inorganic phosphate, which provides the usable energy to drive the work.

The ATP pool is continually replenished: cells regenerate ATP from ADP and Pi through cellular respiration (in most organisms) and, in plants and other photosynthetic cells, through photosynthesis. This regeneration keeps a ready supply of energy available, so ATP serves as a versatile, fast, and portable energy currency for many essential activities like active transport, muscle movement, and biosynthesis.
